Hardware for your point-of-sale can be ordered in virtually any configuration to suit whatever needs your business has. While this flexibility makes it difficult to provide a one-size-fits-all installation guide, there are some basic guidelines we can offer.
A typical retail bundle
Commonly a retail customer will have a 'retail bundle' of hardware which consists of:
- iPad stand
- Cash drawer
- Bluetooth receipt printer
- Barcode scanner (Optional)
A typical restaurant bundle
Restaurant customers generally purchase a bundle which contains:
- iPad stand
- Cash drawer
- Wired (Ethernet) receipt printer
- Wired (Ethernet) kitchen order printer
Some customers may also purchase an iPad from a reseller that happens to also be an authorized Apple reseller such as some larger institutional/bank partners.
A third option
A third and popular option is the Elo all-in-one Paypoint dock which contains the barcode scanner, receipt printer and cash drawer in a single, sleek unit. Additional order ticket printers, barcode scanners, card readers and more can be added on to suit your needs.
Regardless of the hardware bundle you've chosen, the first step is to unpack all of your equipment. Each device will come with documentation ranging from a simple quick-start guide to a full manufacturer manual. Locate these items and set them aside for reference during setup and filing once everything is up and running.
Ensure each device is complete
All receipt printers (except mobile printers) will contain a power cord. None of the talech receipt printers use the plastic spacer which is often included with 80mm thermal roll printers.
Make sure the iPad stand fits your iPad
Check that the stand is the correct dimensions for the iPad you are using. Note that iPad Pro does not fit any of the stands currently available including the Elo Paypoint. If you are using the Elo Paypoint there will be additional trays included in the box with the Elo to accommodate different models of iPad. Check the label in the tray to ensure you are using the correct tray for your iPad.
Place your equipment
In general you should ensure each piece of equipment is placed in a location that meets the needs of the equipment and your staff. Care should be taken to ensure devices are on a clean, level surface with minimal dust and away from sources of heat or moisture such as near a stove, oven or directly in a window, near a sink or wash basin, etc.
Additionally, make sure each device has nearby power. For Ethernet printers, take care to ensure the required Ethernet cable will reach the device and will not be subject to damage from walkways, heat or electrical interference (such as being placed near a microwave or sensitive audio equipment).
Power it all up
Following the manufacturer instructions, setup your equipment and power everything on.
Once all you peripherals are fired up. It's time to configure the app.
