With talech Register 4.7, we've introduced a new Fire/Hold feature for Restaurant merchants. In many busy kitchens, chefs and cooks often need advance notice of what orders are coming down the pipeline. Tickets can be sent to kitchen printers in a Held state, letting cooks know to begin prepping. Waitstaff can then anticipate when guests will be ready for the next course, and Fire the ticket at the appropriate time to ensure that guests experience a seamless multi-course meal.
Enabling the Fire/Hold Feature:
To enable the Fire/Hold feature, first ensure that you've updated to talech Register version 4.7+ and navigate to Back Office > Settings > General > Coursing. This setting is device specific, meaning you will need to enable it on each individual iPad or tablet running talech Register.
Enable Coursing: Enable the new coursing UI. Turning this on will add a new button in the Register to easily add courses to an order.
Allow Hold and Fire Courses: Allow courses to be sent to kitchen printers in either a Hold or Fire state.
Include Items on Fire Ticket: If toggled on, 'Fire' tickets will contain the items. If off, Fire tickets will only contain the course number.
Prompt for Position/Course when Adding Item: When Register view is set to sort by course, prompt for position. When Register view is set to sort by position, prompt for course.
Default Number of Courses: The default number of courses that appear in the Prompt for Course dialog.
Fire/Hold user interface:
A: Order sorting mode. Use "sort by course" if you will be holding and firing courses.
B: Fire/Hold toggle. Tap this to switch between Fire and Hold.
C: Add a Course. Tap this to create a new course.
D: Edit menu. When Fire/Hold is active, the Delete Order button is moved into this overflow menu.
Order creation flow:
Begin by tapping an item and if the "Prompt for Position/Course when Adding Item" setting is on, the user will be asked to make a selection. If Register view is sort by position, user will be prompted to choose a course. If sort by course is set, user will be asked to choose a position.
By default, the first item is added to Course 1, and the course is set to Fire.
Additional items added to the order will continue to be added to Course 1. Tap Add Course to create a new course. By default, additional courses will be set to Hold. Tap on the course header to switch focus between courses.
Tap on Fire / Hold in the course header to toggle between the two states. You can also drag & drop items between courses. When everything is in its proper course and position, press the Send button to generate order tickets. The items in the order will turn blue, and the order header will be timestamped with the Fired time.

Additional items can be added to a course that has already been printed. If a course has already been fired, users will only have the option to FIRE the course. In courses that have been Held, the user can choose whether to Fire or continue to Hold. Sending these additional items will result in an order ticket that reads ADD-ON for the additional items.
